The Ram Mandir is a Hindu temple under construction in Ayodhya, India. It is being built on a spot considered to be the birth place of Ram – one of the principle incarnations of the divine in the Hindu tradition.
This temple is creating a tremendous amount of global attention because it is being constructed on top of what was previously a mosque called the Babri Masjid mosque. The earlier name of the mosque was Masjid-i Janmasthan ("mosque of the birthplace") which further implies it was constructed to replace the existing temple consecrating Ram's birth--along with anecdotes of local tradition.
You can see the timeline shared on a website like Al-Jazeera which highlights a history of the key points in this event. The mosque was built by Babur, the first emperor of the Mughal Empire, which replaced the Lodi empire which had been previously ruling out of Delhi.
It is interesting to note that around the time Babur marched into India, there was a Saturn-Uranus square (Jan 1521 - Feb 1524). These kinds of Saturn-Uranus transits generally reflect a psychological climate around the collapse of a pre-existing paradigm, as well as the birth of a new one. Thus, it is interesting to note that around the time of Babur's entry into India, the Lodi Empire was collapsing. Babur reached the edge of India in 1519, and had invaded Delhi by 1526. The invasion of Northern India by Babur framed the Saturn-Uranus square. One can only imagine what it must have felt like to be alive at that time as the existing Lodi empire crumbled due to collapsed trade routes. We can actually get a historical echos in our own time as we have just emerged from a Saturn-Uranus square (Jan 2020 - Nov 2023) which saw the dawn of AI and the collapse of the Web 2.0 tech economy.
The Babri Masjid was actually constructed in 1528, which was a few years before the Saturn-Uranus conjunction (Jun 1531 - Sep 1534). Thus it does not coincide with a new alignment, but one can imagine a new paradigm had been initiated in the previous square of 1521 - 1524 where it became common for the Mughal Dynasty under Babur to destroy existing religious landmarks to be replaced by Muslim ones. As described in Babur's autobiography, his campaign led to towers of skulls of infidels being piled up on nearby hills.
The next event described by Al-Jazeera is the first recorded instance of conflict over this site as a Hindu sect took issue in 1853 with the fact that the Babri Masjid had been built on one of India's holiest sites. This occurred during a Saturn-Uranus conjunction (Mar 1850 - Jun 1852). One of the common themes during Saturn-Uranus is an assertion for a new narrative of history. For example there has been a historic acceleration in the removal of Confederate monuments (158 total removed after 2020, 61 total removed before 2020--as of Jan 2024) in the United States during the most recent Saturn-Uranus square (Jan 2020 to Nov 2023).
Another example of this kind of "re-contextualizing history" theme is the famous Japanese film Rashomon (1950) which describes a court case of a murder which keeps getting re-contextualized as additional perspectives come into the story. This film was released at the start of a Saturn-Uranus square(Nov 1950 - Sep 1954).
It is interesting to note that another major Rashomon-esque film, Hero (2002) was also released during a Saturn-Uranus square (Jul 1998 - May 2001). Thus showing how these perennial themes capture the public imagination as we are going through a repeated transit context as we seek to understand and explore the nuances of the psychological complex we are experiencing and that is evolving under the aegis of subsequent transits.
The next major moment described by Al-Jazeera was when the British erected a fence in 1859, partitioning the site into two separate sections for Hindus and Muslims to worship separately. This occurred during the subsequent Saturn-Uranus square (Nov 1859 - Aug 1863).
Starting in 1950, a series of civil suits were filed from both the Hindu and Muslim sides. This coincided with a Saturn-Uranus square (Nov 1950 - Sep 1954). It also brings up theme we've been noticing during Saturn-Uranus transits of major legal issues rising to the forefront of public consciousness. For example the most recent Saturn-Uranus square (Jan 2020 - Nov 2023) has seen the emergence of legal action in several themes we've been tracking including lawsuits against the dawn of generative AI, lawsuits against the establishment of carbon credits as a fundamental foundation to the global economy, and lawsuits against Donald Trump.
In 1990, a leader of India's right-wing BJP party, Lal Krishna Advani, led a nationwide campaign to replace the mosque with a temple. This occurred during a Saturn-Uranus conjunction (Dec 1985 - Dec 1990). This movement culminated in the destruction of the mosque in 1992.
In September 2010, the Allahabad High Court declared that the site should be shared by Hindus and Muslims, echoing the British ruling to split the site of 1859. However, other psychological dynamics are shaping India's political discourse around this time and the ruling fails.
After lots of back and forth over the next decade, in 2019, the Supreme Court of India finally declares that the site should be used to build a Hindu Temple. This occurs just at the start of a Saturn-Uranus square (Jan 2020 - Nov 2023), which culminates with the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in a huge ceremony in India in Jan 2024. In many respects this is seen as the dawn of a major new paradigm in India with the Hindu majority finding its own footing in what was previously a more ambivalent stance towards India's Hindu heritage.
Thus we can see that the Ram Mandir--its themes of re-framing history and the dawn of a new paradigm--crystalize the psychological gestalts of the many Saturn-Uranus transits that were occurring as key decisions were being made about this site. We can also note the theme of a new paradigm in the invasion of Babur in the 16th century, as well as his own re-framing of history as he initiated a destruction of landmarks of the indigenous religion.
Looking into the future, we would anticipate a renewed inflection in this narrative arc in the history of India and Islamic Influence in the next Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 2030 - 2034.
